The common name "forget-me-not" was calqued from the German Vergissmeinnicht, and first used in English in 1398 AD via King Henry IV. A large number of stories and myths surround the plant, including one of two lovers walking along the Danube River first seeing the bright blue blossoms. The man retrieved the flowers for the woman, but he was swept away by the river and told her not to forget him as he floated away.

Michael was inspired by the wildflower buds and leaves on sprouting vines, which open upward to the sun while the vines grow and ascend from the ground. As spring returns, nature becomes adorned once again with these leafy vines continuing to sprout as the season progresses.

The Collection’s inspiration started with Judocus de Vos’s work of the “Audience of the Prince Belgian” tapestry that tells the story of the history of the King of China. The original tapestry was woven at the Manufacture Royale de Beauvais around 1724 and is now in a private collection.
